Project Summary
Nestled among large second growth conifers, trees are important to residents of the City of Sammamish. The City's Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) was created to formalize this relationship and the City's core values of forest health and environmental sustainability.
We supported the City's UFMP efforts in three key way:

We supported the City's UFMP efforts in three key way:
- We provided an analysis of the City's current tree protection policies using an integrated ecology framework. This analysis also included a scientific overview of important threats to Sammamish's trees, and discussed how these threats might change with global climate change and increased development pressure.
- We created land cover classification maps using orthoimagery and LiDAR data. The resulting GIS layers were used to assess the current urban forest.
- We provided multiple public education workshops. These covered the urban forest and key tree diseases, including laminated root rot, an important fungal disease that infects Douglas fir trees in Sammamish.

- Shared ecological knowledge and advice: Our policy report integrated and summarized current ecological knowledge and applied it to Sammamish's current policy concerns.
- Research and problem solving: We adapted industry standard land cover classification methods to provide Sammamish with a data product exceeding required specifications despite incomplete data.
- Education and Communication: Public presentations on Sammamish's urban forest and laminated root rot.
